Mark Leddy and the power of Antitrust

Competition is the spice of the market economy. It is a valuable ingredient because it guarantees the quality of products and services, ensures their availability and variety, and lowers production and distribution costs. Despite these advantages, even in the most advanced economies, competition is still under threat. It is threatened by predatory and illegal behaviours, such as cartels, monopolies or state aid, which favour a specific company at the expense of its competitors who cannot count on the same privileged treatment.

There is also a certain sectoral culture capable of imposing the continuation of the status quo as the best possible form of economic organisation, and pro-competitive innovations as the whims of some liberalist professor who does not know the world.

Pro-competitive reform efforts find a further obstacle in the fact that very often it is not enough to pass new legislation, since its implementation requires the active collaboration of segments of the public administration deeply involved in the old equilibria.

Mariella Palazzolo and Marco Sonsini of Telos A&S will discuss this with Mark Leddy, a renowned lawyer and one of the world's leading experts on antitrust. Our appointment is on Thursday 18 November 2021 at 6pm on Telos A&S YouTube channel. A new live streaming meeting for the series Shall we Call Power Odd and Scary Beast?, organised by Telos A&S to present the volume the collection TWO by PRIMOPIANOSCALAc.

In the course of the conversation, we will address the delicate topic of the relationship between Antitrust Authorities and politics and the differences between the United States and the European Union.

We will not forget to talk about the current controversy surrounding the Italian Competition Bill and the relationship between competition, tariffs and trade wars.

The next meeting of the series Shall we Call Power Odd and Scary Beast? will be on:

  • 16 December 2021, The power of lobbying with Theodoros Koutroubas, political science professor.
