Journalism and power with Toyosi Ogunseye from BBC

Is journalism sensitive to the seduction of power? Mariella Palazzolo and Marco Sonsini will discuss this with Toyosi Ogunseye, Head of West Africa for the BBC World Service, on Thursday, 16 September 2021 at 6pm during a live event on Telos A&S Facebook and YouTube channels. The conversation will be held in English.

The live broadcast is part of the series of events Quell'animale strano del potere, which in its English version will be titled 'Shall we call power odd and scary beast?'. One of the most controversial topics of all time is discussed by some of the key contributors to the monthly publication PRIMOPIANOSCALAc, whose interviews have been collected in the bilingual Italian-English volume the collection TWO.

The second meeting in the series focuses on the relationship between journalism and power. Politicians who own newspapers, journalists who see the media as a springboard into politics, politicians who woo journalists to curry favour with them, journalists who look at political office as a supplementary pension scheme. Does this sound familiar? It appears like a description of the situation in many European countries, including ours, but it happens in Africa, too.

Toyosi Ogunseye will bring her experience of Nigeria, and that of the West African States she covers for the BBC. After earning a degree in biochemistry and a master's degree in media and communication, she turned to investigative journalism. Some of her reports changed the laws in her Country, such as the one on the use of codeine (a morphine derivative) in cough syrups, which had turned them into a dangerous and widespread street drug.

Can journalism flirt with power? And what is the price for society if it does? See you on 16 September to find out.

The next meetings will be:

14 October 2021, The power of voting with Jason Brennan, "one of the world's leading academic experts on voting and political knowledge" (The Wall Street Journal)

18 November 2021, The power of Antitrust with Mark Leddy, Co-Chair of Cleary Gottlieb's Global Antitrust and Competition Practice

16 December 2021, The power of lobbying with Theodoros Koutroubas, Political Science Professor

Always on Thursdays and always at 6 p.m. We look forward to seeing you.
