The 2017 avatars by Primo Piano Scala c

New year new cover. Every year we change the layout of the monthly publication by Telos A&S Primo Piano Scala c. This year, 2017, is the year of the avatar. All our guests have been portrayed using an image similar to the ones used in video games. They become virtual figures without eyes, nose or mouth. Graphically, the challenge is to distance the individuals from their physical features and make them recognisable only thanks to one detail.

In some cases eyeglasses and a small flag on a tie makes the difference, Alessandro Perego for example; in others, for instance Marco Lombardi, a waistcoat and a scarf; still others are identified by an ancient Roman haircut, in this case the writer Valerio Massimo Manfredi. It’s easier with women: a beret and a scarf represent Marcela Serrano‘s creative spirit, the only one privileged to have her mouth in the image.

It’s hard to believe, but although the avatars are alienated from the real person they do however capture a feature, a characteristic, sometimes even a mannerism. And they say more about them than we could have ever imagined.

This is even more evident by watching the video where each cover is sided by the picture of the interviewee. You can find it in here  https://youtu.be/iUWda9a9sBY

And the 2018 covers? We’re going to dedicate them to typographical symbols. But that’s another story you’ll discover month by month.
