Marco Sonsini’s interview to the National Bulgarian Television BNT1, on the eve of the European Election

In this excerpt of the interview, Aleksandar Markov, BNT1 reporter, asks to Marco Sonsini: ‘What message would founding-member Italy send to EU, if it sent the biggest Eurosceptic national group to the Parliament?

Sonsini, replies that it might be the second-largest group in the whole European Parliament after Germany’s CDU. ‘The message would be quite clear in my view: a plurality of Italian voters have come to the conclusion that Italy needs to depart from the mainstream economic policies of the last decades, and think that EU, and the Euro in particular, are no solution to any of these problems, but in many case the problem itself.’ This is a huge development for a country that used to have one of the highest approval ratings for the EU and European integration in general, he adds. ‘In my view, the economic and social consequences of austerity have led many Italians (probably beyond those who vote for Lega) to think that joining the single currency has brought more harm than good. So, I guess the message is that the current macroeconomic governance of the Eurozone is not sustainable, both economically and politically, for one of the founding members of the Union.
